Update on California's Eviction Moratorium
On June 25, 2021, Governor Newsom and the state legislature signed off on extending California’s evictions moratorium, and increased funds allotted to the statewide rent relief program.
The three-party agreement carries forward the current eviction moratorium through September 30, 2021 as part of an effort to quickly turn over more than $5 billion in federal rental assistance to tenants and small landlords to avoid eviction and homelessness.
AB 832 also increases California’s rent relief program, including a provision for 100% reimbursement for both rent that is past due and upcoming payments until September 2021.
To be eligible, tenants must make 80% or less of the area median income, sign a declaration confirming their economic hardship resulting from the pandemic, and pay 25% of what they owe between September 1, 2020 and September 30, 2021 (or within the last 12 months). All water and utility payments are also included in this deal.
